SRU’s master’s degree in health informatics ranked one of the country’s best

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - Slippery Rock University's master's degree in health informatics has been ranked among the nation's top 50 programs by bestcolleges.com.

Health informatics specialists work to establish and maintain the information technology systems within a health care organization. That work involves ensuring that the systems comply with company policies, regulations and the law. Specialists are involved with researching technology systems, planning for the implementation of the chosen system and analyzing data using data mining processes.

 

The majority of the health informatics specialist positions are in leadership roles that work as a liaison between corporate data management and technology departments to store, retrieve, process and analyze data using the latest hardware and software systems.

Bestcolleges.com methodology for ranking is "grounded in statistical data and a few consistently applied guiding principles" according to its website. Its rankings reflect the most recent data compiled from IPEDS and College Navigator, both of which are hosted by the National Center for Education Statistics. Their goal is to "objectively assess relative quality based on academic outcomes, affordability and the breadth and depth of online learning opportunities."

The following criteria was used to make their assessments:
-Each school must be an accredited public or private, not-for-profit institution.
-Must offer an online master's in health informatics degree program
-Must submit an annual report to the National Center for Education Statistics.

All eligible institutions were ranked on a 100-point scale that included:
-Academic quality (admissions rate, enrollment rate, retention rate, six-year graduation rate and number of health informatics graduates), 50 percent.
-Affordability (average net price, percentage of enrolled students taking federal loans and loan default rate), 25 percent.
-Online programming (percentage of graduate programs offered online, graduate school enrollment and percentage of programs offered at the graduate level), 25 percent.
