SRU to host PA economic conference June 2-4

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - Economists from the worlds of academia, banking and community development will present keynote addresses on the economy's role in the future of health care and neighborhood revitalization when Slippery Rock University hosts the 2016 Pennsylvania Economic Association Conference, June 2-4 at SRU's Smith Student Center.
The conference will provide more than 90 students and faculty members from 30 institutions around the world the opportunity to present economic and business research. Sunita Mondal, an SRU assistant professor in the School of Business, is serving as conference director.
According to Mondal, student presenters will speak about a range of topics, including: international equity markets; the effects of the Marcellus shale gas boom; economic development in Rwanda; vegetarianism and climate change; and public housing and the effect of health care costs on nations' economic health, among others.
GRABOYES
"Presenting original research at a professional conference such as this provides students with the confidence they need when they begin transitioning to the real world," said Mondal. "It's also a great way to showcase mastery of the subject matter when applying to graduate school or a respective job fields."
FEE
Keynote speakers for the event include: Robert Graboyes, senior research fellow at the Mercatus Center at George Mason University and Lisa Nelson and Kyle Fee, community development advisers from the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland.
Graboyes will offer "Fortress and Frontier: Health Care Innovation for a Digital World" at noon, June 3 in Room 315. He will discuss ways in which America can make health care as innovative in the next 25 years as information technology was in the past 25 years.
Graboyes will join David Jordan, SRU associate professor in the School of Business, as roundtable panelists in discussing "The 100-year Doldrums of Health Economics," at 2:15 p.m., June 3 in Room 319.
NELSON
Prior to his time at George Mason University, Graboyes was a senior health care adviser for the National Federation of Independent Business; an economics professor at the University of Richmond; regional economist/director of education at the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond; and a Sub-Saharan Africa economist for Chase Manhattan Bank.
Graboyes earned a Ph.D. in economics from Columbia University; master's degrees from Columbia University, Virginia Commonwealth University and the College of William and Mary; and a bachelor's degree from the University of Virginia.
Nelson, a community development adviser, and Fee, a regional community development adviser, will present "Opportunity Occupation" at 3:45 p.m., June 3 in Room 321.
Nelson, who conducts research on neighborhood stabilization efforts and workforce development, previously served as associate director for community information at the Center on Urban Poverty and Social Change at Case Western University.
Fee conducts applied research related to economic development, workforce and neighborhood development throughout Ohio, western Pennsylvania, eastern Kentucky and the northern panhandle of West Virginia.
