SRU Security Studies Program announces annual speaker series

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. — Slippery Rock University's Department of Homeland and Corporate Security Studies will kick off its annual speaker series, featuring three experts from the fields of risk management, insider threats and fraud, Sept. 12.

"This series gives students perspective to aspects of our field that they might not experience in the classroom," said Johnathan Henry, SRU assistant professor of homeland and corporate security studies. "We'll be hosting individuals that work in the industry and learn about their work and research while providing students with the opportunity to ask questions and to get a further understanding of those topics. This (series) will give students a sense of what the field is currently like and what it will be in the future."

The series will feature:

Henry Willis, a professional researcher specializing in risk management with the RAND Corporation, who will discuss the company's Homeland Security Operations Analysis Center. Willis will speak on HSOAC's role in evaluating operations for the Homeland Security Enterprise which is comprised of institutions and agencies that attempt to support the United States through numerous national mission spaces. He will also discuss the recent publication of the Homeland Security National Risk Characterization and how risks are evaluated at a strategic level. Willis' presentation is Sept. 12.

Tracy Cassidy, an investigative researcher specializing in insider threats with the Association of Threat Analysis Professionals, who will be discuss the role of threat analysis professionals in various fields, Oct. 10. Cassidy will also address the role of ATAP and the impact of insider threats and how they are identified and handled.

Bernie Rafferty, a fraud examiner with the Schneider Downs and Association for Certified Fraud Examiners, who will address the impacts of fraud, the role of the ACFE and the recently published Fraud Benchmarking Study, Nov. 14.

All speakers will appear at 12:30 p.m. at Spotts World Culture Building, Room 111.
