SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - The American College of Healthcare Executives' Western Pennsylvania chapter will host a panel discussion and networking event from 5-7:30 p.m., Sept. 20, at Slippery Rock University's Russell Wright Alumni House to discuss "Developing Mentoring & Coaching Skills."

"This event is a great opportunity for early careerists in the health care industry from varying capacities," said David Jordan, SRU professor of business and coordinator of the health care administration and management program. "(The panelists) are the best to network with for people right out of the gate to understand their path and their journey as they enter the industry. It's nice just to have a conversation for advice on where to go."

A 23-year veteran of health care administration, Jordan was a regional vice president for Managed Care before coming to SRU six years ago. He will serve as a panelist at the ACHE event, along with Jana Panther Thomas, director of marketing/PR and foundation for Butler Health System, and Rob Jackson, chief executive officer at Grove City Medical Center.

The panelists will discuss ways their organizations acculturate new executives and implement mentorship programs. They will also share best practices for seeking potential mentors and how to get the most out of professional relationships.

"I want (attendees) to walk away developing the soft skills to be able to network and get to know people," Jordan said. "They need to understand the value of other people's journeys in their early career. Also, I'd like them to start reflecting upon the value of finding a good mentor, and being a good mentee, and how to identify these opportunities when they start in an early career because that's when it's most important."

The event, which includes hors d'oeuvres, is open to SRU students and the general public. Registration is: $10 for students, $20 for ACHE members and $25 for non-members. ACHE members and non-members can register by clicking here. SRU students can register and have their registration fee waived by submitting an RSVP through SRU's CORE platform on the "ACHE Careerist Event" page.
