Sept. 27, 2016

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - With the first presidential debate now in the books, it's time to put serious thought into which candidate you'll be selecting in November.

But before you can walk into your local polling station and cast your ballot for either candidate, you have to be registered to vote.

As luck would have it, Sept. 27 is National Voter Registration Day.

In Pennsylvania, the process couldn't be simpler and can be done completely online in a few easy steps:

  • Visit register.votesPA.com;
  • Fill out the form and submit your application;
  • Use the application number provided to track your submission; and
  • Watch your mailbox for your voter registration card

Register.votesPA.com is available in English or Spanish, and also allows currently registered voters to more easily make updates to their voter record, such as a change of name, address or party affiliation. When an applicant completes the online form, the information is forwarded directly to the appropriate county voter registration office for processing.

Because the online voter registration site is directly linked to PennDOT's Motor Voter system, if an applicant has a driver's license or PennDOT ID card, the signature already on file with PennDOT can immediately be linked to the voter record.

Applicants, who do not have a driver's license or PennDOT ID card, may upload a digital signature; submit their signature by mail or in person to complete the registration process. A signed application must either be delivered to your county voter registration office or postmarked no later than the registration deadline.

If an applicant is not able to print the application, they may request that the Department of State mail them a signature card to complete and return to their county office.

Pennsylvania's deadline to register to vote in the general election is Oct. 11.

At noon today, the state will hold a Twitter town hall about voter registration. The meeting can be viewed by following @PAStateDept. You can join the conversation by using the hashtags: #CelebrateNVRD and #votesPA.
