SRU SGA hosts ‘Campus Safety Week’

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - Hot on the heels of Slippery Rock Borough being ranked among the safest college towns in the nation, the Slippery Rock Student Government Association is providing students with protections tips as part of its "Campus Safety Week" now through Sept. 30.

The program will include an open forum with University Police Chief Michael Simmons and presentations on cyber safety, domestic violence, sexual assault and the effects of drinking and driving.

"Our main goal is to make our campus, as a whole, safer," said Allie Sedon, a public health major from Russell and SGA commuter senator, who coordinated Safety Week. "My hope is if we can educate a portion of our campus, then the effects will spread and more of our students will feel safe on and around campus."

Abby Fugh, a business management major from Butler who serves as vice president of the SGA Student and Academic Affairs Committee, said the topics were selected based on the results of a student safety questionnaire initiated by SGA during the 2015-16 academic year.

Part of the goal, Fugh said, is to empower students to make safe choices. "We want students to take ownership of their own safety," she said.

Events for the week include:

• Sept. 27: Drinking and driving/traffic safety presented by Paul Novak, interim executive director environmental health and safety, 6 p.m., Room 116, Vincent Science Center
• Sept. 28: Domestic violence presented by Jodi Solito, director of The Women's Center and Pride Center, 6 p.m., Room 105, Vincent Science Center.
• Sept. 29: Campus Police open forum presented by Simmons and Novak, 6 p.m., Room 105, Vincent Science Center.

A Sept. 26 workshop on cyber security kicked off the week.
