SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. — Larry Kelly's late father, Fred, advised him that to achieve success he needed "VISTA" - vision, integrity, selfless, tenacity and ability. Now, as an accomplished lawyer, Kelly will share his career story and his father's advice with the Slippery Rock University community, 6:30 p.m., Oct. 2, at the Russell Wright Alumni House as part of SRU's Alumni Speaker Series.

Larry Kelly, an attorney with the Luxenberg, Garbett, Kelly & George law firm, will speak
at Slippery Rock University as part of SRU’s Alumni Speaker Series, 6:30 p.m., Oct. 2, at the
Russell Wright Alumni House.

The event, hosted and sponsored by the Green & White Society, the Slippery Rock Alumni Association and the SRU Alumni Engagement Office, is free and open to the public and will be followed by a question-and-answer session and a dessert reception.

"The goal of the Alumni Speaker Series is to bring successful alumni back to campus to have them share their stories with our students, because they all started at the same place," said Kelly Bailey, director of alumni engagement. "This will help showcase different career paths and life plans that you can have with an SRU degree. We ask our presenters to follow a TED Talk format where they are not telling their life story but a component or advice that led them to success."

For Kelly, that means sharing VISTA.

"If you have vision, if you have integrity, if you are selfless and are willing to work hard, and you couple that with average ability, there is no success that you desire that you will not be able to achieve," said Kelly in a YouTube video clip outlining the VISTA steps to success.

Kelly earned a bachelor's degree in elementary education and communication from SRU in 1975 before graduating cum laude from the University of Akron's School of Law in 1983. His career has seen him log time as a teacher, sports writer for the New Castle News, customer relations manager for Universal Rundle and an attorney.

A resident of Ellwood City, Kelly has spent nearly four decades as an attorney at Luxenberg, Garbett, Kelly & George, P.C., during which time he was named a Pennsylvania Super Lawyer 13 times. He will return to the University Oct. 11 when he will be one of four SRU graduates honored as Distinguished Alumni.

The Alumni Speaker Series will return at 6:30 p.m., Nov. 6, when Cathy Burnheimer, '96, founder of Popped Envy, an online-order gourmet popcorn business, will speak at the Russell Wright Alumni House.
