SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - The Slippery Rock Student Government Association has organized four events, Oct. 2-5, as part of "Student Safety Week" at the University. The informative programs are intended to raise awareness and prepare students at Slippery Rock University for emergency response.

"It's always good to be informed about how to be safe," said Scott Vogelgesang, SRSGA vice president of student and academic affairs and a senior integrated marketing major from South Lake Tahoe, California, who helped organize the week's events. "We want people to be aware of any concerns we have on campus and for people to be as safe as possible. You never know when you could be in a scenario either on campus or out in the world where you could possibly save an innocent life."

Two programs will inform students about first aid and other emergency health care responses, while two other sessions will identify potential dangers on campus and ways to be safe:

-"Stop the Bleed," 5-6 p.m., Oct. 2 in Room 116, Vincent Science Center: A representative from the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, Pennsylvania's largest trauma system, will teach basic first aid for victims of severe blood loss from injuries such as gunshot wounds, mass casualty incidents, motor vehicle accidents and other traumatic events. The event is sponsored by Fraternity and Sorority Life.
-Campus Crawl, 7:30 p.m., Oct. 3: Participants are invited to gather on the second floor of the Smith Student Center outside The Suite to take part in a walking tour of campus with Scott Albert, assistant vice president for facilities, planning and environmental safety, to identify potential safety concerns, such as inadequate lighting or dangerous sidewalk access.
-First Aid/Cardiac Emergency, 5-6 p.m., Oct. 4 in Room 116, Vincent Science Center: A group of SRU alumni from Before It's Too Late, a safety, first aid and healthcare company, will conduct free, non-certified training for first aid and cardiac emergency response and explain what it means to be a "bystander" and how to treat unresponsive individuals.
-"What Would You Do?", 5-6 p.m., Oct. 5 in Room 116, Vincent Science Center: Jodi Solito, director of the Women's Center, will lead a discussion about identifying high-risk scenarios and suspicious activities and how students should respond. The program is sponsored by the SRU Women's Center.

All events are free. For more information about any of the week's events, contact Vogelgesang at: 530.545.8000 or srv1002@sru.edu.
