SRU to offer Professional Development Day event Oct. 4

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - Slippery Rock University will host a Professional Development Day Oct. 4 for faculty and staff that will include workshops, faculty presentations and a keynote address by Peter Doolittle, assistant provost for teaching and learning and professor of educational psychology at Virginia Tech University.

The event, 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Smith Student Center, is themed: "What is an SRU Education? University-Wide Learning Outcomes and the Role of Disciplinary Majors and Minors, Liberal Studies, and Co-Curricular Programs."

Doolittle will serve as facilitator of the event's first workshop, "Implementing Interdisciplinary Learning Experiences: Nuts, Bolts, Uncertainty and Trust," from 8:30-9:30 a.m. in the Smith Center Ballroom.

Concurrent faculty presentations will be offered from 9:35-10:15 a.m., including:

  • "The Complexities of Gender: Transgender and Gender Diverse Identities," by Catherine Massey, associate professor of psychology, and Jodi Solito, director of SRU's Women's Center/Pride Center, Room 319;
  • "Inter-Professional Education ¬- Preparing Students for Collaborative Practice," by Michele Crytzer, associate professor of nursing; Diane Frndak, associate professor of biology/physician assistant; Carol Martin-Elkins, professor of physical therapy; Joseph Robare, associate professor/MPH program director public health and social work; and Bonnie Siple, professor of exercise and rehabilitative sciences, Room 320; and
  • "Integrating Undergraduate Research into Four-Year Degree Programs," by Heike Hartmann, associate professor of geography, geology and the environment, Room 322.

Simultaneous faculty presentations will be offered from 10:20-11 a.m., including:

  • "Integrating Research Across Multiple Disciplines: The Sailcloth Art Project," by Heather Hertel, associate professor of art, Room 319;
  • "Integrative Learning Through The Stone House Center for Public Humanities," by Lia Paradis, associate professor of history, Room 320; and
  • "Professional Spanish or French Majors/Minors - A High Impact/Transformational Experience," by Gisela Dieter, assistant professor of modern languages and cultures; Robert Fagley, instructor of modern languages and cultures; and Ana Maria Caula, associate professor of modern languages and cultures.

A panel discussion on the outcomes of an SRU education will be offered from 11:05-11:50 a.m., in the Smith Student Center Theater.

Doolittle will deliver his keynote address, "Designing Flexible Interdisciplinary Learning Experiences in a General Education Program," at noon in the Ballroom. He has taught undergraduate and graduate students in public and private institutions for 25 years, using traditional, blended and online formats.

Following Doolittle's address, a trio of concurrent faculty presentations will be offered from 1:20-2 p.m., including:

  • "Encouraging Academic Integrity by Giving an Academic Quiz," by Stephen Larson, assistant professor, School of Business, Room 319;
  • "Using Labor Market Data in Your Program and Curriculum Evaluations," by Kevin McCarthy, senior business intelligence analyst for academic planning, resource management and assessment, and Samantha Kelly, accreditation coordinator, academic planning, resource management and assessment, Room 320; and
  • "Appropriately Assessing Student Knowledge Using Multiple-Choice Questions," by George Lengyel, assistant professor of chemistry, Room 322.

The event will conclude with roundtable discussions, 2:05-3 p.m. in the Ballroom, which will focus on new directions for liberal studies education.
