The Rocket captures five Gold Circle Awards

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - The Rocket, Slippery Rock University's independent, student-run newspaper, has captured five awards in the news and design divisions of the Columbia Scholastic Press Association's 33rd Gold Circle Awards for outstanding collegiate journalism.

The Rocket placed in the categories of sports page design, art illustration, single feature photograph, single sports photograph and newsmagazine cover.

Awards were presented to The Rocket in the following categories:

Art illustration/hand drawn: First place, "The Force is Strong" by Karleigh Santry, a communication major from Lake City;

Single feature photograph: First place, "Black Arts Festival" by Kendall Scott, a recreational therapy major from Bent Mountain, Virginia;

Sports page design: First place, "PSAC Wars," by Santry;

Newsmagazine cover: Second place, "PSAW Wars," by Santry; and

Single sports photograph: Certificate of Merit, "Women's LAX Falls" by Scott

This year's competition drew more than 10,600 entries produced by students at colleges, universities and secondary schools throughout the U.S.
