SRU vocalists to compete for Chad Williamson Scholarship

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - Twelve Slippery Rock University student vocalists will demonstrate their range at 2 p.m., Nov. 4 at Swope Music Hall when they compete for the Chad Williamson Memorial Vocal Scholarship as part of the 25th annual competition.

Each student will present two selections.

The scholarship, which provides tuition support to three SRU students, honors the late Chad Williamson. Williamson, a Slippery Rock Area High School graduate, planned to study music at SRU but was killed in a traffic accident prior to his freshman year.

Karen Legato, a 1991 SRU communication graduate and former SRU employee, and the late Fred Williamson, started the scholarship in 1992.

Robert Chafin, an internationally acclaimed tenor and young artist program director for the Pittsburgh Festival Opera, will serve as judge.

Student performers and their selections are:
-Austin Cornelius, a sophomore music education major from Industry, will perform "Vaghissima Sembianza" by Stefan Donaudy and "The New Suit" by Marc Blitzstein.
-Hannah Floyd, a sophomore music therapy major from Sheffield Village, Ohio, will perform "Lullaby" by Gian Carlo Menom and "Burn" by Lin-Manuel Miranda.
-Haylee Jayne Goodenough, a senior music therapy major from Honesdale, will perform "Apres un reve" by Gabriel Faure and "In uomini, in soldati" by Mozart.
-Mariel Helstorm, a senior music education and music therapy major from Langhorne, will perform "Ah! Spiegarti, Oh Dio" by Mozart and "Il Curioso Indiscreto" by Gaetano Donizetti.
-Hunter Humphreys, a sophomore music major from Slippery Rock, will perform "Verborgenheit" by Hugo Wolf and "Der Vogelfanger Bin Ich Ja" by Mozart.
-Emma Martin, a senior music therapy major from Lebanon, Ohio, will perform "The Shining Place" by Lee Hoiby and "Oh Quante Volte" by Vincenzo Bellini.
-Charity O'Donnell, a sophomore music therapy major from Butler, will perform "Er, derr Herrlichste von Allen" by Franz Schubert and "Non so Piucosa Son" by Mozart.
-Jacqui Rush, a sophomore music therapy major from Quakertown, will perform "La Gondola" by Gaetano Donizetti and "Once I Was" by Ricky Ian Gordon.
-Lindsey Stank, a sophomore music therapy major from Williamsport, will perform "Sure On This Shining Night" by Samuel Barber and "Per Involarmi Al Duo Lo" by Handel.
-Katherine Steele, a senior music education and French major from Cranberry Township, will perform "Smanie implacabili" by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and "In the Beginning" by Jake Heggie.
-Alaina Stroud, a junior music therapy and music education major from Hopewell Township, will perform "Piangero la sorte mia" by Guilio Cesare and "L'Heure exquise" by Handel.
-Chase Upchurch, a junior music therapy and music education major from Titusville, will present "Comfort ye, my people; Ev'ry valley shall be exalted" by George Frideric Handel and "Stranger" by Andrew Lippa.
-Maria Veltre, a sophomore music therapy major from Pittsburgh, will present "Per pieta, bell'idol mio" by Vincenzo Bellini and "People" by Julie Styne.

The competition is free and open to the public.
