SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - For many Slippery Rock University students, it's the most wonderful time of the year - and not because of the upcoming holiday season.

Rather, and specifically for those slated to take part in the University's Dec. 17 commencement ceremony, it's because the SGA Bookstore's "Graduation Celebration" happens 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Nov. 8 in the Smith Student Center Ballroom.

Nearly 585 Slippery Rock University undergraduate and graduate students who have applied to graduate at the December ceremony will get the chance to purchase regalia, a class ring, diploma frame and other University memorabilia during the event.

Applicants who applied by the Oct. 1 deadline are guaranteed up to four guest tickets for commencement and may pick them up at the fair. Tickets will also be distributed Nov. 15-23 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in 201 Old Main. There will be a special Saturday distribution of tickets Nov. 19 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Smith Student Center. The final day to pick up tickets is Nov. 23. A valid student ID is required to pick up tickets.

The "Graduation Celebration" will give students several opportunities to make connections. The SRU Alumni Association will distribute zipper pulls to candidates, collect future job information and distribute medallions to magna cum laude graduates. Graduating seniors will be able to join the Alumni Association for a special rate of $25 and includes a free t-shirt.

Staff from SRU'S Office of Career Education and Development will distribute information about two upcoming programs including the "Senior Career 411" program in December. That event will cover resumes, cover letters, LinkedIn, networking, interviewing skills and the best and worst way to look for a job. A new "Senior Transitions Conference," set for March, is designed to provide 2017 graduates and young alumni capstone skills that will support their success in job searches and during their first years in the professional world, according to John Rindy, director of career education and development.

Questions related to caps, gowns, announcements and rings should be directed to the SGA Bookstore at 724.738.2014.
