SRU to host Bulgarian accordionist Dec. 8

Vladimir Mollov, a Bulgarian-born accordionist currently based in Pittsburgh, will perform at Slippery Rock University’s McKay Education Building Auditorium at 7:30 p.m., Dec. 8.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - Vladimir Mollov, a Bulgarian-born accordionist currently based in Pittsburgh, will demonstrate the flavor and festiveness of Bulgarian folk music during a concert at Slippery Rock University at 7:30 p.m., Dec. 8, in McKay Education Building Auditorium.

Warren Davidson, SRU assistant professor of music, arranged the concert as a public component of his "Intro to World Music" class.

Mollov will perform "wedding band" folk music, which is known for its lively tempo and rhythm. Accompanying Mollov during his performance will be his brother Hristo Mollov on clarinet; Stoyan Kostov on Bulgarian tambura; and percussionist Mitko Nikolov.

Born in 1983, Vladimir Mollov began taking accordion lessons at age 7. He located to the U.S. in 2002 to attend Duquesne University. He has composed for and performed with the Duquesne University Tamburitzans, the longest running multicultural song and dance company in the country, which specializes in the folk and gypsy music of eastern Europe. The Tamburitzans were created in 1937 by Dr. A. Lester Pierce

Mollov recorded his first CD, "Dreams," in 2009, featuring original instrumental pieces.

Admission to the concert is $5.
