Slippery Rock University has received a grant from the Centers for Disease Control through the Pennsylvania Department of Education to implement school wellness programs at six school districts in western Pennsylvania. The $8,880 grant will be used to provide training for K-12 school teachers and administrators that will help increase their students' physical activity and nutrition.

Led by Hannah Brewer, associate professor of physical and health education, SRU faculty from the Physical and Health Education Department will serve as school wellness consultants, assisting schools in updating their current health and physical education curricula to have a greater focus on wellness. Funds will also provide fruits and vegetables, access to water and physical activity opportunities for students in the districts.

The six school districts that qualified for assistance are Franklin, Oil City, New Brighton, United, Penns Manor and Blairsville-Saltsburg.
