Two Slippery Rock University students recently presented papers at the XV Undergraduate Research Colloquium, a conference organized by the Department of Hispanic Languages and Literatures at the University of Pittsburgh.

Logan McIntyre, a sophomore dual major in environmental geoscience and modern languages and culture from Volant, presented her paper, "6.000 kilómetros separados en dialectos gemelos: estudio contrastivo de variables fonéticas de hispanohablantes cubanos y canaries." The paper is an analysis of shared phonetic features in the Cuban and Canary Islands dialects of Spanish, a topic McIntyre developed from an assignment in her Introduction to Spanish Linguistics and Phonetics course.

Miranda Filak, a junior secondary education-Spanish major from Belle Vernon, presented, "La cultura gitana: una perspectiva artística basada en Carmen," an analysis of stereotypes of gypsies and Spanish identity as seen in the 2003 Spanish film "Carmen." Filak wrote the paper during her study abroad program in Alcalá de Henares, Spain.
