Brett Barnett, a Slippery Rock University professor of communication, recently had an essay published in a special edition of Journal of Hate Studies, the only peer-reviewed academic journal exclusively devoted to the study of what hate is, where it comes from and how to combat it.

The special edition, "Interrogating the Place of Hate in the 2016 Presidential Campaign," sought to highlight the different places that "hate," including racism, misogyny, homophobia, anti-Semitism, ableism and xenophobia, materialized during the presidential campaign.

Barnett's essay, "The Trump Effect: The 2016 Presidential Campaign and the Racist Right's Internet Rhetoric," examined the divisive rhetoric witnessed during the 2016 presidential campaign.
