SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - The 48th annual Slippery Rock University Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance Mini-Convention will take place April 18 at Morrow Field House. SRU's Physical and Health Education Department and the School Wellness Education Council, SRU's student-run health and wellness professional development organization previously known as SRUAHPERD, are hosting the event.

The SRUAHPERD Mini-Convention is an expo for professionals and students to collaborate and learn effective wellness or health and physical education strategies. The event includes breakout sessions, programs, demonstrations, an awards ceremony and a keynote address, which will be delivered by James Sturtevant, author of "You've Gotta Connect" and "Hacking Engagement."

The theme of this year's event is "Let's Connect," which is related to teachers and schools connecting with students through wellness initiatives.

"We believe teachers and schools can serve as the heart for creating a healthier society," said Hannah Brewer, SRU assistant professor of physical and health education and the SWEC adviser. "Education is about the whole child, and connecting with students creates a culture of wellness where students feel valued, respected and empowered. Focusing on students' wellbeing opens the door for more learning to take place."

The SRUAHPERD Mini-Convention is in accordance with Act 48, a state-mandated continuing professional education requirement for educators holding Pennsylvania public school certification. Attendees' Act 48 cards will be signed by student presiders, earning attendees an hour for each program or session.

Registration and breakfast begins at 7:15 a.m. with opening remarks at 8:30 a.m. Sessions begin at 8:50 a.m., followed by lunch at 12:20 p.m., the keynote at 1 p.m., a final session at 2:10 p.m. and the awards ceremony from 3:15-3:45 p.m. Cost is $20 for professionals and $7 for students.
