A.J. Sumser, a Slippery Rock University senior recreational therapy major from Avon, Ohio, and Mary Zipfel, a sophomore health and physical education major from Sutersville, were awarded the 2021 Michael Phelps Foundation Student Scholarships by the National Drowning Prevention Alliance. The scholarship funded Sumser and Zipfel’s registration for the National Water Safety Conference, conducted virtually March 29 to April 1. The NWSC is the annual conference of the NDPA, a nonprofit organization that provides the public with drowning prevention and water safety education and programs. The Michael Phelps Foundation is a charitable organization launched by the Olympic champion swimmer to promote healthy, active lives by expanding the opportunities for participation in the sport of swimming.
