Student Organizations

In addition to coursework, you can further your personal and professional growth by becoming active in a range of co-curricular activities. The Strategic Communication and Media Department encourages all majors to participate in these organizations to develop skills, gain insight, and engage in hands-on learning that you just can't get in the classroom. Becoming involved in the following student run groups brings you together with other students who share your interests and career aspirations.

The Rocket

The Rocket, SRU's award-winning student run weekly newspaper provides students interested in journalism, graphic design, writing, advertising, and website development the opportunity for practical hands-on experience. The Rocket is considered one of the best online college newspapers in the country.

WSRU-TV

WSRU-TV is the student-run television broadcast and video production company that gives students the opportunity to gain experience in video production, broadcast journalism, and broadcast media in general. An all new digital TV studio opened in the fall of 2010 and a Mac based editing bay was introduced in the spring of 2017.

ROCK PRODUCTIONS (PRSSA)

Rock PRoductions is the student-run public relations firm on campus. Rock PRoductions offers public relations services to campus and non-campus organizations and local businesses. As a member of Rock PRoductions you will gain public-relations based work experience while interacting with clients who need assistance with services in design, event planning, promotions, and much more. In addition, you will be recognized as a member of the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA), the national pre-professional public relations organization that gives students real hands-on public relations experience.

LAMBDA PI ETA

Lambda Pi Eta is the official honorary organization for the Strategic Communication and Media Department that seeks to encourage student involvement. Lambda runs a host of programs throughout the year, from Registration Help to Relay for Life. Lambda also serves as the student advisory board for the department.

College Dress relief

College Dress Relief is a student advocacy group focusing on current fashion trends, sustainable fashion, diversity, and professional development. Members contribute to an online student-run fashion and lifestyle blog geared towards Slippery Rock University students and the surrounding community. They are also focused on relieving the daily stress college students endure by encouraging everyone to share their personal styles!

SRU UNICEF

The SRU UNICEF Club is an organization founded in 2018 to raise awareness and advocate for children’s rights. Through education, advocacy, and fundraising, we strive to organize students for the survival, protection, and development of children worldwide.

Film Society

The Film Society at Slippery Rock University is a dedicated movie organization. Here, you can create, discuss, and watch films. This organization provides you with the materials and equipment to create your own productions and gain hands-on experience with camera operation, audio production, screenwriting, editing, compositing, and directing. Students involved with the Film Society at Slippery Rock University also have the opportunity to travel, participate, and volunteer in film festivals such as the New Orleans Film Festival.

WSRU 88.1 FM

WSRU-FM 88.1 is an FCC regulated radio station and podcast studio on campus. The station gives students hands-on experience in all aspects of radio and audio production including on-air, sports play-by-play, promotions, and event planning all under the guidance of a faculty advisor. WSRU-FM operates out the University Union and is open to students from any major.
