Community Service and Service Learning
The Slippery Rock University offers students a variety of opportunities to participate in community service that addresses critical needs in our local, national, and global communities. Service engages students to learn about social issues, implement collaborative problem-solving to address community needs, and leverage community assets to create positive social change. Service promotes student growth and development by providing a space to build relationships on- and off-campus, gain hands-on experience in their area of study, learn about themselves and their role as citizens, engage in critical self-reflection and discussion, and take on leadership positions on-campus and in the Western Pennsylvania community.
Slippery Rock University seeks to prepare students for civic engagement and active citizenship. At SRU, students will acquire and apply skills and knowledge based on partnership and reciprocity within and beyond the university community (SRU Student Learning Outcome, 2017). Students are encouraged to build on their service experiences; starting with volunteering through short-terms service opportunities, engaging with on-going service programs or alternative breaks, and later taking on civic leadership roles on campus and in the community.

On-Going
The Office for Community-Engaged Learning offers on-going service programming opportunities for SRU students interested in addressing youth development (Rock Star Neighbors), animal rights and activism (Shelter Sidekicks), or inter-generational relationship building (Dream Chasers)
Short-Term
Slippery Rock University offers short-term projects including Community Service Day, Service Saturdays and Project Christmas Elf.

Service-Learning Courses
Service-learning integrates community service experiences into the academic curriculum at Slippery Rock University. SRU students can enroll in courses that provide opportunities to engage with surrounding communities and practice the skills that will prepare them to be effective civic-minded professionals and citizens.
