Slippery Rock University's Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education: Social Studies and History program prepares future educators to instruct students, design classroom presentations, become experts in their field, and succeed as teachers. Are you passionate about the Civil Rights Movement? Do you want to learn more about Hannibal crossing the Alps? As a secondary Social Studies/History teacher, you'll introduce these pivotal moments and more to a new group of students every year.

You will have an excellent foundation in history and social studies, as well as the tools required to be an effective classroom teacher. In addition to a comprehensive curriculum, SRU also offers scholarships for academic excellence to education students.

Secondary Education students also have multiple organizations on campus that help with professional development and networking. The Secondary Education Club travels to schools and other institutions to learn more about teaching, and majors can also join Kappa Delta Pi, the national honor society in education.

What Will You Learn?

SRU's Secondary Education program helps you become an expert in social studies and gain the skills that will make you a successful educator. The teaching curriculum at SRU includes courses in human development, methods of instruction in secondary content areas, courses that will prepare you to teach the Ancient World and Modern China, and everything in between. Some of these classes include The Historian's Craft, American National Government, Rise of the Modern World, and Contemporary World History.

We also offer study abroad programs that will enhance your knowledge of the cultures that you'll teach. You will also have student teaching opportunities that provide valuable real-world classroom experience, preparing you to go confidently into the field upon graduation.

Upon degree completion, students are qualified to teach history and social studies to grades 7-12. Aside from being one of the most personally rewarding careers, teaching also provides a stable work environment, good benefits, and opportunities to positively influence class after class of students. In addition to the coursework requirements, Pennsylvania's teacher certification is met by successful completion of the Praxis Exam, a Criminal Background Check, and field and student teaching experiences.
