SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - A reception for Slippery Rock University's "Polish Poster School" exhibit is at 4:30 p.m., today, in SRU's Martha Gault Art Gallery in Maltby Center. The exhibit showcasing posters designed by Polish artists for display in Polish theatres continues through Jan. 28. From the 1950s-1980s, the Polish Poster School style of art combined the aesthetics of painting with a simple metaphor to produce works with strong power of suggestion. The posters utilize painterly gesture, linear quality, vibrant colors and personality, humor and fantasy, said Barbara Westman, associate professor of art. Artists have melded text and image to deliver a visual coupe with uncensored passion, worthy of international appreciation, she said. The posters are on loan from Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
