Matt Rees, a Slippery Rock University senior music education major from Pittsburgh, received the Collegiate Professional Achievement Award from the National Association for Music Education. Rees was one of only five music education majors in the U.S. recognized for “demonstrating exemplary commitment, excellence and achievement in the field of music education.” Each year, NAfME awards college students who have served their chapters in an exemplary manner.

Among Rees’ activities, he led weekly, 45-minute sessions to introduce music exploration to preschoolers and elementary-aged children and he participated in the Make Music Pittsburgh festivals, helping teach children turn trash and household items into musical instruments.
