Social Work

Offered by: Social Work

Slippery Rock University’s Bachelor of Science in Social Work (BSW) degree program prepares students for a successful career changing lives in their communities. Whether they become social workers, counselors, or any number of possible career positions, BSW graduates make a positive impact on the world. Social Work is the perfect major for individuals passionate about sparking societal change and helping people function successfully in their environments.

The Social Work degree program at SRU is accredited by the Council of Social Work Education. We also offer a minor in Social Work. This is an 18-credit minor that encompasses crucial coursework, including Child Welfare and Crisis Intervention.

Why Major in Social Work?

Social work is the perfect career for individuals looking to make a difference. Graduates can work in numerous career fields, including education, non-profit, and government. Furthermore, a BSW is the minimum degree required in many states to begin a career in the field of social work. We also have a Social Work Association on campus to help students network and socialize with other Social Work majors.

With nearly all SRU Social Work graduates finding employment after graduation or continuing on to graduate school, you can feel confident that the work you do at SRU will prepare you to meet challenges in the field. Your instructors, with decades of clinical, group, administrative and policy experience, guide learning through internships, service-learning and other real-world settings. Abundant internship opportunities are available and frequently lead to offers of employment.

What Will You Learn?

Through a curriculum that prepares students for diverse types of social work, graduates leave SRU with a better understanding of how to help and care for people. Classes such as Sociology, Psychology, and Social Policy help students develop the skills necessary to excel in future practice with individuals, group work, community organizing, agency leadership, and management, and social policy.

At SRU, you won’t just learn in the classroom. Our world-class faculty equips you with the tools needed to participate in one of our many internship opportunities. Not only will you learn important skills that last the rest of your career, but many of these internships lead to work after graduation. Our Social Work students have found internships and employment at Children’s Hospital Pittsburgh, Butler County Children and Youth Services, and the Victim Outreach Intervention Center.

Careers In Social Work

Social workers enjoy employment in a wide variety of settings. A social worker's clients may range from young children to elderly individuals in hospice care settings. Veterans' service organizations, adoption agencies, domestic violence programs, drug and alcohol agencies, and private industry—among so many others—are all areas in which social workers practice. The common thread in these areas is that a social worker is often in a unique position to be a positive force of change in a client's life.
