SRU's annual Giving Day is April 26

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - Giving Day at Slippery Rock University is March 26 and the goal for this year's one-day fundraising campaign, organized by the Slippery Rock University Foundation, Inc., is a nice, round number: $100,000

While reaching for six figures may seem ambitious, it's just building on the fundraiser's history, which has doubled each of the last two years. The 2018 Giving Day initiative raised $54,000 from nearly 700 donors. To help achieve this year's goal the SRU Foundation has ramped up its communication with potential donors and has strengthened its partnership with the Slippery Rock Student Government Association.

People interested in supporting SRU through the Giving Day campaign can visit the website, givingday.sru.edu, where they can designate their gift to any area on campus they would like to support. On-campus groups were invited to create their own pages within the website where they can provide updates about their fundraising progress and details about their organization.

New for 2019 is a challenge where SGA will match up to $3,000 to the student club or organization that raises the most money on Giving Day.

"A goal of ours is to work more collaboratively with different groups on campus and this is a step in that direction," said Logan Tupper, a senior health care and administration major from Butler who is SGA's vice president of finance. "A lot of organizations weren't aware of Giving Day, even though last year was so successful. We're building momentum, and a lot of organizations are looking for more ways to raise funds."

Tupper is also a vice president of his fraternity, Theta Chi, which embraced the Giving Day campaign last year by meeting one of the Foundation's challenges, becoming the fastest group to reach 25 donors, earning Theta Chi a matching gift of $1,000 from the Foundation.

"We stayed up past midnight together, had our laptops out and were emailing everyone we knew to reach our goal," Tupper said. "It's just a fun event and all the money goes straight to our organizations."

In the spirit of Theta Chi's gathering to have its own "fundraising headquarters," SGA and the Foundation are partnering to host a space in the Smith Student Center Ballroom during Common Hour, 12:30-1:30 p.m., March 26, for clubs and organizations to work together to help rally their supporters online. The social media hashtag people are encouraged to use to spread the word is #SRUGivingDay.

In addition to donating online, Giving Day participants can contribute by phone by calling 724.738.2004 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. or by mail to: SRU Foundation, Inc., 104 Maltby Ave., Suite 100, Slippery Rock, PA, 16057.
