Mark O’Connor, a Slippery Rock University associate professor of English, and Mary Jo Ross, an associate professor of hospitality and tourism management, were awarded Butler SUCCEED Fellowships by SRU’s Center for Community Engagement, Empowerment and Development.

The program awards up to $1,000 to SRU faculty and staff to support their students' participation in activities that create, extend or enrich a partnership with a Butler-based community organization outside of the University and align with a Butler SUCCEED program.

O’Connor’s grant will support his Writing Community Stories course as they partner with the Butler County Drug and Alcohol Program to conduct creative writing workshops for people in recovery, including autobiographies, family-member interviews and stories about practitioners and administrators who work with them. Ross’ grant will support students from the SRU hospitality and tourism program as they work with SpringHill Suites by Marriott in Butler, working in rotations of various hotel property operations.
