Hannah Brewer, a Slippery Rock University associate professor of health and physical education, received a $15,000 grant from the Tuscarora Intermediate Unit 11 for a project that provides professional development for Pennsylvania K-12 teachers and administrators to incorporate school wellness programs.

Now in its third year, the program, titled “Creating a Healthier Society Through Schools,” helps teachers and administrators from the Penns Manor, Blairsville-Saltsburg and Moshannon Valley school district increase students’ physical activity and nutrition. In addition to writing the grant proposal, Brewer serves as a consultant, training teachers and assisting schools in updating their current health and physical education curricula to have a greater focus on wellness.

Tuscarora Intermediate Unit 11 is a regional educational service agency that serves four counties in central Pennsylvania, but the grant, affiliated with the Pennsylvania Department of Health, is available for select schools across the state.
