Physics Programs

Studying physics at SRU will provide you with quantitative, analytical and problem solving skills that will open doors to many career options. Students in the physics program at SRU can choose from three options to earn a degree in Physics. The department also offers a minor in Physics option.

Physics, B.S.

The BS in Physics is designed to provide a broad background in physics for individuals planning careers in physics and related technical fields, including those who plan to pursue graduate studies in physics. The physics B.S. majors have to complete: (1) a prerequisite introductory physics & math sequence, (2) core sequence of upper level physics courses, (3) related field work in chemistry, computer science and mathematics, and (4) the liberal studies program.

Computational Physics, B.S.

The BS in Computational Physics combines physics, computer science and applied mathematics in order to provide scientific solutions to realistic and often complex problems. Areas of application include the nature of elementary particles, the study and design of materials, the study of complex structures (like proteins) in biological physics, environmental modeling, and medical imaging. A computational physicist understands not only the workings of computers and the relevant science and mathematics, but also how computer algorithms and simulations connect the two.

Computational Biophysics, B.S.

The BS in Computational Biophysics prepare students to use concepts and methods of physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics, and computer science to understand the biological processes of living organisms. This interdisciplinary concentration is intended for students in the Physics B.S. or Computational Physics B.S. program with an interest in applying their expertise to biology or medicine.

Pre-Masters of Education in Physics

The Pre-Masters of Education in Physics program is for students interested in teaching physics at the secondary school level. This degree is offered in cooperation with the Department of Secondary Education at Slippery Rock University. Students graduate with a Masters of Education degree with an emphasis in Physics. Students first complete a degree in physics, earning either a B.S. or B.A., and then complete a three-semester Master's Degree option from the College of Education at SRU. Many students elect to obtain state certification leading to certification for high school teaching.

Physics, B.A.

The B.A. in Physics is for students desiring a broad liberal education with an emphasis in physics. These majors will follow the same math and physics prerequisites as the physics B.S., but includes a somewhat lighter core content. This is a less technical degree that prepares you for employment or for graduate studies leading to a master's degree.
