SCHOLARSHIPS

A list of scholarships offered specifically for SRU criminology and criminal justice students is available using the drop-down menu at this link.

CRIM CLUB

The CRIM Club is the official student-led organization of the Criminology and Criminal Justice Department. Club officers and members attend and organize events, some of which include field trips to correctional institutions and hosting guest speakers. These events not only deepen students' knowledge of the field of Criminology and Criminal Justice but also provide camaraderie with fellow students and networking opportunities with criminal justice professionals.

The CRIM Club not only offers students an excellent way to get involved in departmental activities but also provides opportunities for students to take on leadership roles and responsibilities. Club officer positions include: president, vice-president, treasurer, secretary, and parliamentarian. Officers are elected yearly. Those elected are responsible for organizing events based on members' interests, budgeting, and promoting club activities.

ALPHA PHI SIGMA - KAPPA IOTA

Founded in 1942, Alpha Phi Sigma is the only Criminal Justice Honor Society, is a certified member of the Association of College Honor Societies and affiliated with the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences. Alpha Phi Sigma recognizes academic excellence of Undergraduate and Graduate students of Criminal Justice, as well as Juris Doctorate students. The goals of Alpha Phi Sigma are to honor and promote academic excellence, community service, educational leadership, and unity (http://www.alphaphisigma.org/).

Kappa Iota is the local Chapter of Alpha Phi Sigma at Slippery Rock University and was founded in 2009. The purposes of the Kappa Iota chapter are: (1) to promote ethical criminology through education and leadership; (2) to encourage positive participation within the student body in the criminal justice field and (3) to promote the education of the community about the field of criminal justice.

The chapter has four officers and Dr. Rebecca Ridener serves as the chapter's advisor. As an active member of Kappa Iota, students are required to complete 10 hours of community service. The members have been involved in peer-mentoring, peer-tutoring, campus cleaning, promoting sexual assault awareness and domestic violence awareness, and helping the non-profit organization Living in Liberty to help sex-trafficking victims.

Every Spring, new members are initiated through an induction ceremony.  In the ceremony, members solemnly promise to uphold the ideals and traditions, maintain high moral character, and commit themselves to be governed by the Bylaws of Alpha Phi Sigma, the National Criminal Justice Honor Society and the local and national officers. In the Spring of 2023, 14 new members were inducted into Kappa Iota.
