Dance

The professional field of dance and the performing arts in general are continuously evolving. Students pursuing a degree in dance learn how education, creativity, technology, research, and the business of dance are interrelated and important to any dance career.

The SRU dance curricula (BA and BFA) are designed for students seeking careers as dance professionals that are specifically focused or multilayered. The degrees provide the advanced training needed to pursue performing, choreography, and teaching careers in dance, as well as careers in dance technology and dance wellness, among others. The diverse curriculum for both degrees provides students with access to a wide range of educational and artistic opportunities in preparation of the students’ chosen career path.

Thom and Christine Cobb Scholarship Fund

Upon his retirement, Thom generously created the Thom and Christine Cobb Scholarship Fund, which is used to award scholarships to deserving students. Although we lost Thom in 2016, his spirit is still alive within the Department of Dance. In Thom’s memory, donations can be made to the scholarship fund to continue supporting the students that he so dearly loved.

Mission

The Department of Dance at Slippery Rock University promotes dance as an art form through the creative, technical, expressive and intellectual development of each student in a personalized environment. Superior education in performance, choreography, and teaching with additional components of wellness for dance, dance technology, and intercultural experience, prepares students for their chosen profession and entrepreneurial role in society.

Goals and Outcomes

PROGRAM LEARNING OUTCOMES

Choreography: Create and organize movement into artistic and aesthetic choreography.
Communication and Critical Thinking: Demonstrate the ability to communicate and think critically in the areas of performance, choreography, and teaching.
Cultural Diversity: Synthesize the social, political, and artistic role of dance in a global context.
Degree Program Writing Competency: Demonstrate writing that is clear, cohesive, and relevant to the dance field, utilizing appropriate vocabulary, grammar, research, and citation methods.
Teaching: Organize the knowledge, skills, aesthetics, and art of dance into effective, ethical and responsible teaching practices.
Technique: Demonstrate mastery of the core concepts in dance technique and performance in DANC 428 (modern dance technique VI).
Wellness: Apply dance wellness principles in the areas of performance, teaching, and choreography.
