Dance Companies

The Slippery Rock University Department of Dance houses three resident dance companies to provide students with excellent opportunities to choreograph and perform. Campus performances, as well as touring, comprise an important part of the dance students' preparation for their professional careers. Every semester guest artists visit campus to both teach and create works, creating a strong professional network for graduates to enter the field of dance.

Slippery Rock University Dance Theatre

Slippery Rock University Dance Theatre (SRUDT) presents several concerts each year, with additional performances at festivals and conferences. Under the Artistic Direction of faculty member Lindsay Viatori, SRUDT choreographers and performers undergo a rigorous rehearsal and audition process, which culminates in the pre-professional concert that has become a major part of the cultural life on campus. This company provides students with the opportunity to create and perform dances influenced by their knowledge of dance technology, modern, contemporary, jazz, and tap forms.

Palenque: a Colombian Dance Company

Afro-Colombian Dance Ensemble Palenque: Colombian Dance Ensemble promotes Latin American culture through dance. Directed by Professor Melissa Teodoro who is a research specialist in Colombian dance, Palenque has performed throughout Western Pennsylvania in numerous festivals, conferences and educational venues, as well as in West Virginia, Ohio, and California. Members of Palenque have the opportunity to travel with Professor Teodoro to different locations in the Caribbean coast of Colombia, where they conduct ethnographic research of Afro-Colombian dance and culture.

Dance Express

Dance Express is a hip hop student-run performance group that performs at basketball games and other campus functions. The goal of Dance Express is to promote school spirit through dance.
