SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. — Slippery Rock University's nursing program has received a 2019-20 Colleges of Distinction Field of Study badge. The badge brings SRU's total on the year to three following awards to the business and education programs earlier this summer.

The COD Field of Study badges represent programs that invest in student engagement in fields that demand innovative, critical thinking. COD awards badges after a comprehensive vetting process, individually selecting schools based on such qualities as accreditation, breadth of program and a track record for success.

SRU, one of the first nursing programs in the country to offer classes completely online, has two programs: a 21-credit program for graduate students to become certified school nurses and a 39-credit program for registered nurses to build on their associate degree or diploma education and earn a Bachelor of Science in Nursing.

The majority of the students in the RN-to-BSN program are working in the field and complete their degrees at their preferred pace, thanks to eight-week sessions each semester.

SRU's nursing program offers classes taught by faculty with doctoral degrees and a curriculum focused on skills, such as teambuilding and communication, that are sought after by potential employers. The RN-to-BSN program is accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing.

According to COD, "The accredited nursing program at SRU has enabled its students to take calculated action, even in high-pressure situations. With the programming offered at SRU, its students are challenged to remain curious and compassionate throughout their rigorous practice."

Aside from SRU's three Field of Study badges, COD has recognized SRU with two "College of Distinction" awards for 2019-20, including designation as a national and Pennsylvania College of Distinction. Overall, COD evaluates institutions for their commitment to "Four Distinctions:" engaged students, great teaching, vibrant community and successful outcomes.
