About Our Secondary English Program

Slippery Rock University’s M.Ed. in Secondary Education: English is designed for individuals who hold a bachelor’s degree and want to become certified English teachers. This 36-credit program can be completed in just one year of full-time study, with flexible start terms and student teaching in either the fall or spring. Graduates earn a master’s degree and may be eligible for Pennsylvania teaching certification.

This program is an ideal fit for career changers or those looking to enter the classroom for the first time. To meet Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) requirements, you’ll need to demonstrate content expertise in English. SRU will review your transcripts and help identify any coursework you may need. You can also prove content mastery by passing the Pennsylvania Content Knowledge Certification Exam an option we’ll discuss with you upon acceptance.

Basic Concentration:

  • All applicants must have a bachelor’s degree with appropriate course work in English with an overall GPA of 2.80 or higher from an accredited institution of higher education to enter and a 3.0 GPA to exit the graduate program
  • Official undergraduate degree transcript(s) and any graduate transcripts
  • Resume

Advanced Concentration:

  • All applicants must have a bachelor’s degree with an overall GPA of 3.00 or higher from an accredited institution of higher education
  • Official undergraduate degree transcript(s) and any graduate transcripts
  • Copy of teacher certification
  • Resume
