Secondary Math/Science STEM Concentration (M.Ed.)

About Our Secondary Math/Science STEM Concentration Program

SRU's Master of Education in Secondary Math/Science focused on STEM education is perfect for aspiring and current middle or high school teachers. The program is divided into two concentrations to serve different career stages. The Basic Teaching Concentration is for individuals with a bachelor's degree in mathematics or a science field (such as biology, chemistry, geology, or physics) who are seeking to earn a master's degree and their initial Pennsylvania teaching certification. This track, often pursued by career changers, requires candidates to demonstrate content knowledge through a review of their prior coursework or by passing the state's content knowledge exam. The Advanced STEM Concentration is an online program designed for currently certified secondary math or science teachers. It focuses on professional development and leadership, allowing teachers to select elective coursework in areas like instructional design, special education, technology, or counseling.

Why Get a Secondary Math/Science STEM Concentration Degree?

  • Flexibility to fit your busy schedule - structured to accommodate the demands of both aspiring and current teachers, offering pathways like the online advanced concentration that allow you to balance your studies with your professional and personal commitments.
  • A 36-credit hour program that can be completed in one calendar year - this accelerated track allows dedicated, full-time students to earn a Master of Education degree efficiently, enabling a quick transition into the teaching profession or faster career advancement.
  • Leadership skills geared to advancing your career - beyond core teaching competencies, the curriculum is designed to cultivate essential leadership qualities, preparing you to take on advanced roles such as a department lead, curriculum coordinator, or mentor for other educators.
  • Specialization in mathematics and science - provides an in-depth focus on STEM pedagogy, equipping you with advanced instructional strategies and a deeper content knowledge to effectively teach the complex and evolving subjects of math and science in a secondary school setting.

Career Outcomes

Earning your Master of Education in Secondary Education prepares M.Ed. students in the Basic Concentration for teacher certification while currently certified teachers in the Advanced STEM Concentration work to further their teaching abilities in the classroom.

According to 2017-2018 data from the Pennsylvania Department of Education, there is a shortage of educators to teach Mathematics Grades 7-12 and Science Grades 7-12. Earning a STEM-focused master’s in education prepares SRU graduates to pursue these in-demand subject areas as a career path. More broadly, teaching middle and high school is a rewarding profession as it provides ample opportunity to make a difference in the lives of young adults.
