About the Social Work Program
Social work majors at SRU can expect a world-class education. Faculty members have decades of clinical, group, administrative and policy experience. Learning occurs in the classroom and through internships, service-learning and other real-world settings. Our graduates are leaders with successful careers as clinicians, community organizes, directors and educators. Both academic and professional advising is provided to students to assist with their understanding of career options and obtaining professional goals. Because SRU’s program is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education, our graduates are afforded advanced standing in most master’s degree programs in social work, including the SRU Master of Social Work (MSW) program. Advanced standing allows students to complete an MSW degree in one calendar year. SRU’s MSW program builds upon the BSW generalist foundation by offering a specialization in advanced clinical practice with children, adults, and families.
What Can I Do With a Social Work Degree?
Graduates are prepared for careers in child welfare, aging services, drug and alcohol treatment, mental health, family services, corrections, community organizing and working with people who have developmental disabilities. Employers can range from several industries, as well as schools and non-profit organizations. Students who major or minor in psychology, criminology, sociology, allied health, communication, aging and non-profit studies will find the social work program compliments their existing expertise and opens new employment opportunities.
