About our Athletic Training Program

Slippery Rock University’s Athletic Training (AT) Graduate Program combines rigorous academics with hands-on clinical experience to prepare you as a confident, patient-focused healthcare professional. You’ll build expertise in injury prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and advanced rehabilitation all rooted in evidence-based practice.

Why Get an Athletic Training Degree?

Guided by core values like compassion, professionalism, and collaboration, the program equips you with the skills to succeed in high schools, colleges, professional sports, the military, performing arts, and beyond. Graduates are eligible to sit for the Board of Certification (BOC) exam. This program is designed specifically for those not yet certified or eligible.

The Athletic Training program at Slippery Rock University is fully accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE). This accreditation means our program meets or exceeds the highest national standards for quality developed by experts in the athletic training field. Graduating from a CAATE-accredited program is essential, as it ensures you're eligible to sit for the Board of Certification (BOC) exam and become a certified athletic trainer.

1. Official Transcripts (Undergraduate/Graduate) with a GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale. (Students with a GPA below 3.0 may apply for conditional admission).

2. A minimum of a baccalaureate degree (4+2) or completion of the first three years of an approved 3+2 Pre-Athletic Training Concentration AND the following prerequisites (taken within the past 5 years) earning "C" or better:

  • Anatomy & Physiology I with lab (3-4 credits)
  • Anatomy & Physiology II with lab (3-4 credits)
  • Kinesiology or Biomechanics (3-4 credits)
  • Physics I with lab (3-4 credits)
  • Exercise Physiology (3-4 credits)
  • Nutrition (3 credits)
  • Psychology (3 credits; introductory, developmental or abnormal)
  • Statistics (3 credits)
  • Medical Terminology (at least 1 credit)
  • Chemistry (3-4 credits)
  • Biology (3-4 credits)

3. Two letters of reference:

  • One reference should be from an academic advisor or instructor.
  • One reference should be from a health care provider; an Athletic Trainer is preferred.

4. Evidence of 50 hours of clinical observation/shadowing with an athletic trainer. You can upload your own documentation or use the one provided here.
