About Our Music Therapy Program

Slippery Rock University’s Master of Music Therapy program prepares you to grow as a leader in this fast-expanding field. Designed for credentialed music therapists, this graduate program deepens your clinical, theoretical, and artistic skills while advancing your understanding of the therapeutic relationship. You’ll gain expertise in music therapy research, refine your musicianship, and explore the cultural and social dynamics that shape client care—equipping you to make a greater impact in a variety of professional settings.

All applicants must submit the following materials along with a completed online graduate application and a non-refundable application fee:

  • Applicants to the Master of Music Therapy program must have completed a bachelor’s degree in music therapy (with a GPA of 3.00 or higher), including an internship in an approved program, or have completed a music therapy equivalency program, including completion of a music therapy internship
  • Applicants without an undergraduate degree in music therapy or its equivalence can complete the necessary coursework, on-campus or through distance learning, and internship requirements for music therapy board certification through SRU prior to the MMT coursework
  • Official undergraduate degree transcript(s) and any graduate transcripts
  • Resume
  • Personal Statement - statement of Professional Goals
  • Video-recordings of three songs accompanied on piano and three songs accompanied on guitar. On each instrument, there must be one song appropriate for children, one for adolescents or adults, and one for older adults. Video recordings must be provided in a digital format and the links submitted as part of the application materials
  • A synchronous video interview with the MMT program director. Interviews will be scheduled after all other application materials have been filed

Applicants who do not meet all the criteria, but who have demonstrated effectiveness in the field, may be offered conditional admission upon recommendation of the MMT program director and approval by the Director of Graduate Admissions. Admission to the program will not require the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) or other entrance exam, which will facilitate enrollment by adult learners.
