Undergraduate Accounting
About the Accounting Program
The accounting program at SRU is designed to prepare graduates for career success. SRU faculty members teach and reinforce the fundamentals of accounting, but the curriculum goes far beyond that. In addition to the core areas, students can explore through elective coursework topics such as forensic accounting, fraud examination, accounting data analytics and internal audit. Success in the business world depends on more than technical aptitude. SRU recognizes that reality and educates accounting students in other critical business concepts such as economics, finance and management, along with teaching communication and interpersonal skills. Accounting falls under the School of Business which is Accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. As a further option for student success, SRU offers a five-year program to obtain both undergraduate and graduate degrees. Graduates of the 4+1 program receive both a Bachelor of Science in Accounting and a Master of Business Administration as well. While the 4+1 program may not be for every student, it is an especially attractive and efficient option for students seeking to sit for the CPA exam.
What Can I Do With an Accounting Degree?
One of the most attractive features of an accounting degree is the breadth and wealth of available job opportunities. Accounting is a profession, and a technical degree that is highly valued in the business community. A wide scope of businesses employ recent accounting graduates in roles that include a full range of accountant positions, from forensic accountants to tax accountants and everything in between. Numerous other positions are available to accounting graduates, such as auditors, bankers, budget analysts, financial managers and even law enforcement positions. Employers value the skills and knowledge gained from the SRU accounting curriculum, and qualified candidates are in demand. Accounting is the most frequently posted job in the U.S., after nursing. Accounting graduates with enough credit hours can also seek licensure as a certified public accountant. While a helpful credential, the CPA is not necessary for many careers in this field of abundant opportunity. Other popular certifications accountants seek include Certified Management Accountant, Certified Internal Auditor and Certified Fraud Examiner, to name a few.
