Slippery Rock University's Mathematics program provides a strong mathematical foundation with concentrations focused on student interests and career goals. Mathematics majors choose one of four concentrations: Actuarial Science, Mathematical Sciences, Secondary Education, and Statistics. The dedicated faculty are committed to both excellence in teaching and student success. The concentration choice does not limit career opportunities, as the BS degree is a mathematics degree.
Why Major in Mathematics: Statistics?
Massive amounts of data are currently collected as global technological advances occur quickly. The Statistics concentration provides a solid foundation in accurately analyzing and interpreting data. The program provides necessary skills and characteristics that are greatly valued by employers with a need to make data driven decisions. The high demand for these skills leads to highly competitive salaries. Data collection occurs in every field, making these skills applicable in all interest areas. The Statistics concentration is also an excellent second major for any graduate wishing to become more competitive in a chosen field. Our statistics graduates boast a nearly 100% job placement rate in statistical careers, with many securing job offers before graduation.
What Will You Learn?
All SRU mathematics concentrations have the same core coursework, which includes calculus, discrete math, mathematical proofs, linear algebra, and statistics. The Statistics concentration includes additional courses in statistical modeling and computing, statistical learning, and analysis.
A mathematics degree strengthens critical thinking, and students graduating with a degree in Mathematics will:
- Use mathematical knowledge to solve theoretical and applied problems.
- Apply rigorous deductive logical reasoning to prove mathematical results.
- Use appropriate technology to perform and interpret mathematical analyses.
- Communicate mathematical results clearly and precisely to both expert and non-technical audiences.
- Demonstrate professional integrity and accountability in the use and communication of mathematics.
Careers In Mathematics: Statistics
Mathematics degree graduates with a Statistics concentration have endless career possibilities. Graduates may work in finance or healthcare, become data analysts in any field, or work in almost any branch of government, to name only a few of the many diverse possibilities. SRU Mathematics & Statistics students may declare a minor to further advance specialized skills. A few fields that employ graduates with statistical skills are:

Students in the SRU Mathematics program with a Statistics concentration have many internship opportunities. Past student internships have included John Hopkins, AETNA, Erie Insurance, and Progressive. Many graduates have earned degrees in highly competitive graduate programs.
