Undergraduate Mathematics and Statistics
About the Mathematics and Statistics Program
Slippery Rock University's Mathematics program is a student-centered, community-engaged program that teaches you the fundamentals of theoretical and applied mathematics in an exciting and challenging environment. We provide a strong mathematical foundation with concentrations focused on student interests and career goals. In our program you can develop your communication and technical skills with a strong foundation, choosing from four concentrations: Actuarial Science, Mathematical Sciences, Secondary Education, and Statistics. The concentration choice does not limit career opportunities, as the BS degree is a mathematics degree. Our dedicated faculty are committed to both excellence in teaching and student success. You will have opportunities to work closely with professors both in and out of the classroom, and to build professional connections and friendships that will last a lifetime.
What Can I Do With a Mathematics Degree?
Mathematics is more than just working with numbers. In addition to mathematical and statistical skills and knowledge, a mathematics degree confirms the ability to solve complex problems with critical thinking, perseverance, and logical reasoning. Employers in all fields recognize and value these characteristics.
Majoring in mathematics equips graduates for diverse roles across all industries, from education to technology and well beyond, including versatile career paths like actuarial science, data analysis, and statistics. Opportunities abound in all fields, including but certainly not limited to, working in the tech sector with roles in software development, cryptography, and algorithm design. Mathematics cultivates critical thinking crucial for engineering, research, and entrepreneurship. Additionally, it prepares individuals for secondary education, where they can inspire future generations of mathematics students.
Slippery Rock University's Mathematics major is perfect for students looking to further their education with a versatile degree and work in a wide range of careers.
Why Choose a Mathematics Degree at SRU?
- Personalized Degree Program
Our BS in mathematics allows students to focus on their own interests by offering concentrations in actuarial sciences, secondary education, statistics, and mathematical sciences. These concentrations share core classes which gives students the flexibility to change concentrations if their interests change; at the same time, our concentrations include more math electives than most other programs in the region. - Dedicated Faculty
Our faculty are committed to the success of each and every student. This includes engaging in faculty-student research projects, helping students find internship opportunities, being accessible in and out of the classroom, and being involved with student clubs and organizations. They regularly publish original research and have won awards in teaching, research, and advising at the university level and beyond. - High Quality Internships and Research Opportunities
Our students regularly obtain competitive internships and funded research opportunities during the year, and summer, both with SRU faculty and externally via summer REU’s. Our Statistical Consulting Center often employs math majors to let them put theory into practice and gain firsthand experience valued by employers. We encourage our students to engage in career-building opportunities by funding their travel to major conferences, supporting their participation in national competitions, and reimbursing them for professional actuary exams and other certifications. - Student Success
Our students regularly obtain scholarships and win university wide awards, and go on to be successful in a wide variety of well-paying fields, with many of our students securing jobs or getting accepted into graduate programs well before finishing their senior year. - Close-Knit Community
Our students and faculty work together to build a welcoming and supportive environment. We are especially proud to provide a student work space located next to faculty offices, which is the hub of our department. We also host events like picnics, potlucks, and activities for students and professors to get to know one another outside of the classroom.
Through my studies at SRU, I gained real-world experience in my field that strengthened both my technical and communication skills. The practical coursework offered here has been invaluable in my career.

Mathematics BS Concentrations
Mathematics, BS - Concentration in Actuarial Science
Actuaries are professionals trained in mathematics, statistics, and economics to solve problems involving risk management, finance, and insurance. Actuarial skills are highly sought after and greatly valued by employers that need to quantify financial risks of future events. Competitive salaries reflect that demand. The Actuarial Science concentration at SRU will provide you with the base skills to estimate probabilities, measure risks, and answer important financial questions. SRU’s Actuarial Science concentration prepares students for required national actuarial exams. Our department has over 30 years of training students for success in the field, and our students have an exam pass rate about 20% higher than the national average. Many actuarial science graduates secure jobs long before graduation.
