SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - An eager daffodil or tulip popping up in late winter is often the first sign of warmer weather ahead at Slippery Rock University, but what will sprout in email inboxes March 16 is a sign for earnest learners to bring their college credits to full bloom.

That's the date when SRU students will receive information on how to register for Summer Session classes, which will be quickly followed by students meeting with their advisers and advanced registration, April 2-13.

SRU will offer more than 550 Summer Session courses during five sessions May 16-July 30. Nearly two thirds of the summer classes are completely online. For many students, the summer is not a time for leisure but an opportunity to make headway toward degree completion.

"SRU students and students from other institutions should consider taking summer courses to 'get ahead and stay ahead' in their progress toward their degree," said Amanda Yale, associate provost for enrollment services. "Whether students are at the undergraduate or graduate levels, SRU has summer coursework that can meet their needs. Students can select from a variety of courses. For example, students can take a course to meet a general education requirement or a course in their major program."

Summer Sessions have become increasingly popular in recent years as both 2016 and 2017 summer enrollment eclipsed the 5,000-student barrier.

"Summer Sessions give students the flexibility to take a two-week class and be done for the rest of the summer, or students can get ahead by taking multiple summer courses," said Connie Edwards, director of academic records. "They may have had to withdraw from a class in the spring, so taking a class in the summer helps them keep pace and sometimes to get ahead."

Online summer classes have also gained popularity. The percentage of SRU students enrolled in online courses has increased by 27 percent since 2013, compared to a 10.6 percent increase for total student summer class enrollment during that same time.

The five Summer Sessions include: Pre-session, May 16-June 1 (six credits); Session I, June 4-29 (seven credits); Session II, July 2-30 (seven credits); Summer Term, June 4-July 30 (12 credits); and Full Summer, May 16-July 30 (12 credits). Undergraduates can earn 18 credits in 11 weeks and graduate students can take 15 credits in 11 weeks.

Registration for Summer Sessions are conducted online through the MySRU portal on the University website for current students. Non-SRU students can register beginning April 23.
