SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. — Slippery Rock University is hosting its annual Veterans Day ceremony, 11 a.m., Nov. 10, at the Russell Wright Alumni House. The event is free and open to the public. Military veterans are also invited to attend a lunch immediately following the ceremony at the Alumni House.
Both events are organized by SRU's Office of Alumni Engagement and the Office for Inclusive Excellence. Veterans and their families can reserve a spot for lunch by contacting the OIE at 724.738.2700 or OIE@sru.edu.
The Veterans Day ceremony will begin inside the Alumni House and conclude outside at the Alumni Veterans Memorial adjacent to the building.
The alumni speaker is Jondavid Longo, '15, '17M, and mayor of Slippery Rock. Longo served six years in the U.S. Marine Corps, including a combat deployment to Afghanistan.
"It's important for us to celebrate the contributions and sacrifices that veterans have made, not just on Veterans Day, but throughout the year as well," Longo said. "Being a member of the Slippery Rock University community, not just as the mayor of the town (where the University is located), but also as a two-time alumnus, it's important that we're supporting University events. This is a great event to do that and to bridge that gap between town and gown."
As part of the ceremony, members of the SRU Army ROTC will raise the colors, lay a wreath and fire a 21-gun salute. Lt. Col. Jennifer Martin, professor of military science, will recognize enlisted cadets. William Reed, a senior homeland security major from Chambersburg, will provide remarks on behalf of student veterans. Ellie Wingard, a senior music therapy major from Brookville, will sing the national anthem and "God Bless America." Gabe Koller, senior music education major from Bellefonte, will perform "Taps."
The Student Veterans of America student organization at SRU is also hosting events for students related to military appreciation throughout the week. More information for students is available on the SVA page on CORE, the online platform for SRU student organizations and activities.
