Jana Asher, a Slippery Rock University assistant professor of mathematics and statistics, was recognized as a 2022 Pennsylvania STEM Ambassador by the Pennsylvania Statewide Afterschool/Youth Development Network, an organization that promotes sustainable, high-quality out-of-school time youth development programs. The ambassadors program helps shape STEM education in Pennsylvania through vital policy conversation in various levels legislature and policy.

As one of 19 ambassadors selected, Asher will invest 10 months in training and policy development in order to share proper expertise and knowledge with stakeholders and develop stronger influence in STEM education policies.

In addition to her involvement as a STEM Ambassador, Asher recently delivered two talks for separate organizations. Her presentation for the University of Georgia Student Chapter of the American Statistical Association, titled, “The Nine Deadly Sins of Data Visualization... and How to be a Data Display Saint!” was about common mistakes and practices in graphic data. Her other presentation for the History of Statistics Interest Group of the American Statistical Association, was titled “Inverse Probability and the 200 Year Journey to Team Bayesian,” which highlighted an equation that led to new philosophies and data analyses within statistics.
