SRU grad qualifies for 2020 Paralympics

Calahan Young, a 2017 Slippery Rock University graduate with a degree in recreational therapy, has qualified for the 2020 Paralympic Games in Tokyo, Japan, as a member of the United States men's national goalball team.  

Goalball is a sport played by teams of three visually impaired athletes who throw a ball that makes a noise at an opposing team's goal. Young, who has competed on national teams since 2017, will be making his first appearance at the Paralympics.  

Ten countries qualify for the Paralympics. Team USA qualified by placing second at the Parapan American Games in Lima, Peru, where it compiled a 5-1 record with Young scoring 15 of the team's 62 goals. The 2020 Paralympics will take place Aug. 25 to Sept. 6, 2020, in Tokyo, following the Olympic Games.

Young, who minored in adapted physical activity at SRU, is a former president of the Goalball Club Team at SRU.
