Academy of Teaching Scholars

At Slippery Rock University, we believe that continued scholarly growth and professional development inspire great teachers and that the challenges of teaching cultivate meaningful disciplined inquiry. We respect the intellectual and professional nature of teaching that is related to and supported by research, and we see teaching as a reflection of the way faculty define their disciplines. In response, APSCUF and the Office of the Provost are pleased to announce the establishment of the Slippery Rock University Academy of Teaching Scholars.

The Academy of Teaching Scholars was established to honor and reward a select group of faculty who are dedicated to the scholarship of teaching and learning, and to create a collective of faculty advocates who can serve as resources to their colleagues.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the Academy of Teaching Scholars, tenured faculty – including faculty members whose basic responsibilities lie outside of the classroom – must meet the following requirements:

1. Completion of the Effective Teaching Practices Workshops (ETP)

The Effective Teaching Practices workshops prepare faculty to apply innovative and evidence-based instructional practices to their teaching with the goal of maximizing student achievement.

2. Participate in a Faculty Learning Communities (FLC)

Faculty Learning Communities are small, cross-disciplinary groups comprised of both faculty and staff working collaboratively to develop 21st century approaches to teaching and learning in higher education and engage in the scholarship of teaching.

3. ACUE Micro-credential Courses – 2 required

Learn additional specializations with ACUE micro-credential course options: Creating an Inclusive and Supportive Learning Environment; Promoting Active Learning; Inspiring Inquiry and Lifelong Learners; and Design Student Centered Courses.

4. Facilitate a Faculty Learning Community

Share your knowledge and expertise in an area of teaching and learning with faculty from across the university.

5. Presentation and Publication Focused on Teaching and Learning

Share your knowledge and expertise in an area of teaching and learning with a regional, national, or international audience through a presentation/workshop and peer-reviewed publication.

Application Process

The application process for the Academy Teaching Scholars will be facilitated using Watermark Faculty Success (WFS). Contact Brian Danielson and Jeremy Lynch for more information.

October 15: email brian.danielson@sru.edu to indicate your intention to apply.
February 1: Applications are due in Workflow
March 1: Notifcations sent to applicants
May (date to be determined): Award Ceremony
