Slippery Rock University’s Public Health, Bachelor of Science (BS) program prepares students to promote health, prevent disease, and improve the well-being of communities and populations. The curriculum provides a broad foundation in public health, health education, health promotion, and health data management, preparing graduates for entry-level positions and advanced study in health-related fields. Students gain practical experience through service-learning opportunities, faculty-led research projects, student organizations, and peer health education activities. They may also complement their studies with coursework or minors in areas such as psychology, gerontology, or information systems.
A key component of the Public Health, Bachelor of Science (BS) program is a 12-credit internship that allows students to apply their knowledge in professional settings, explore career interests, and complete a project demonstrating entry-level professional skills. Graduates pursue careers in state and local health departments, community wellness programs, nonprofit health organizations, federal health programs, and health insurance companies. The program also provides a foundation for graduate study in public health and related professions, including nursing, nutrition, occupational therapy, physical therapy, and physician assistant studies. Upon completion, students are eligible to take the Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) examination, a nationally recognized credential for community health education professionals.
