Safety Training

EHS/EM developed safety trainings using a structured approach intended to educate individuals on campus safety, health, risk and emergency planning, and preparedness. These programs, available to all faculty, staff and students, cover a wide range of topics from fire safety and emergency planning to indoor air quality and personal safety and security.

Accident Reporting and Workers’ Compensation Training

This one-hour informational session is intended to familiarize all SRU employees, including student employees, with established campus safety programs for accident reporting should they become injured or ill in the performance of their job duties. This training will demonstrate how to fill out an accident report and will acquaint employees with elements of the corresponding SRU’s Workers’ Compensation Program, an employee insurance program which covers medical expenses for injured employees.

Active Shooter Awareness and Survival – Basic

Slippery Rock University is committed to the safety and health of all students, faculty, and staff. As part of ongoing efforts toward campus safety and emergency preparedness, this presentation will include an overview of emergency planning initiatives to date including emergency exercises and planned drills. The focus of the session is designed to empower faculty, staff and students to become stakeholders in their own personal safety and security towards resiliency should an active threat occur on campus.

Active Shooter Awareness and Survival – Advanced

Enhanced discussions of awareness and survival elements surrounding individual personal safety and security strategies presented in the Basic Active Shooter Awareness & Survival Course. Topics include preparing oneself to make quick decisions on courses of action to take when faced with threats of violence toward a person or a group of people. The focus of the session is designed to further prepare and promote the confidence and capability of faculty, staff and students to survive an active shooter situation.

Front Desk/Reception Office Safety & Security

Individuals who occupy the front desk/reception areas represent SRU to every person who enters their office. An integral component of university operations, participants learn how to handle natural disasters, terror threats, service disruptions, medical emergencies, fire, workplace violence and many other emergency situations. The course emphasizes personal safety and being prepared for such incidents.

Safe Drinking Water

Water is considered a universal solvent – odorless, colorless and tasteless. Many of us dispute this statement based on our experiences depending on where our drinking water originates. Whether from natural lakes and streams, mountain springs or underneath the ground, appearance, taste and or smell can vary. This session will provide attendees a review of our nations safe drinking water regulations including what processes are necessary before water can be considered “safe” to consume.

Safety Versus Risk

Many concerns reported as safety issues are often in reality determined to be a risk issue, or a hazard identified that falls more within the realm of risk management. Attendees will be presented with an explanation of the difference between safety and risk and clarification as to where a particular hazard is most appropriately classified as and how best to resolve and/or be addressed.

Understanding Indoor Air Quality: Health Perspectives Including Mold

As a population, we spend the majority of our time indoors. When references are made to pollution we automatically think of outdoor air and the presence of smog or chemicals from manufacturing. In reality, the quality of our indoor air can be compromised by a number of different situations. This workshop is designed to provide parameters of indoor air quality, circumstances in which indoor air quality can be compromised, and the science and myths involving a person’s health and surrounding the presence of mold and mildew on indoor air quality.

Continuity Planning

First responders to campus emergencies take immediate action to address fires, flooding, active threats etc. What will non-emergency responding departmental employees do? The goal of this training focuses on campus operational continuity – maintaining services identified as essential functions for students. Guidance will be provided on risk assessment, business impact analysis and communication. Attendees are encouraged to bring continuity plans from their respective departments.

Emergency Planning and Preparedness

Emergencies including major disasters can occur anywhere and at any time. Planning in advance for emergency situations is the best way to ensure health and safety on campus. This session will provide information on institutional efforts for emergency preparedness that employees should familiarize themselves with and will also include strategies and steps employees can take themselves for personal preparedness. Topics discussed will include evacuation routes, sheltering in place, emergency exercises and drills.
