Slippery Rock University is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, 3624 Market Street Philadelphia, PA 19104 (267.284.5000). The Middle States Commission is an institutional accrediting agency recognized by the US Secretary of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation. The Commission is a voluntary, non-governmental, membership association that defines, maintains, and promotes educational excellence across institutions with diverse missions, student populations, and resources. It examines each institution as a whole, rather than specific programs within institutions. On June 23, 2011 SRU's accreditation was reaffirmed by MSCHE.
SRU submitted a Periodic Review Report (PRR) to the Commission in June 2016. "Characteristics of Excellence in Higher Education, published by MSCHE, states that the PRR process is "intended to strengthen and sustain quality and integrity of higher education, making it worthy of public confidence and minimizing the scope of external control." During the session on November 17, 2016, the Commission acted to accept the Periodic Review Report, to reaffirm accreditation, and to commend the institution for the quality of the Periodic Review Report. The next evaluation visit is scheduled for 2020-2021. The self-study process began in November 2018; visit SRU's 2021 Middle States Self-Study Process site (link in the left navigation bar) for more information. In addition to Middle States regional accreditation, SRU is recognized by various programmatic accreditation bodies.
For more information related to regional or programmatic accreditation at SRU please contact the Office of Assessment & Accreditation at email: firstname.lastname@example.org, phone: 724.738.2149.
Articulation agreements between SRU and other institutions serve as examples of the programs of quality offered by the institution. Articulation agreements for undergraduate transfer students can be found on the Community Colleges and Articulation Agreements webpage. These agreements are included on the various academic degree program pages; however a comprehensive list of programs and universities is included in the SRU Academic Articulation Agreements document.

The entry-level occupational therapy doctoral degree program at Slippery Rock University has applied for accreditation and has been granted Candidacy Status by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) of the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA), located at 6116 Executive Boulevard, Suite 200, North Bethesda, MD 20852-4929. ACOTE's telephone number c/o AOTA is (301) 652-AOTA and its web address is www.acoteonline.org. The program must have a pre-accreditation review, complete an on-site evaluation, and be granted Accreditation Status before its graduates will be eligible to sit for the national certification examination for the occupational therapist administered by the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT). After successful completion of this exam, the individual will be an Occupational Therapist, Registered (OTR). In addition, all states require licensure in order to practice; however, state licenses are usually based on the results of the NBCOT Certification Examination. Note that a felony conviction may affect a graduate's ability to sit for the NBCOT certification examination or attain state licensure.
All students must complete Level II fieldwork (OCTH 810 & OCTH 815) and doctoral experiential requirements (OCTH 820) within 24 months following completion of the didactic portion of the program."
Slippery Rock University anticipates a successful accreditation review prior to the first OT class graduating in May 2021. Graduation from an ACOTE accredited educational program makes one eligible to sit for the certification exam administered by the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT) to become an Occupational Therapist Registered (OTR) and to apply for state licensure in the state(s) one wishes to practice.

At its March 2020 meeting, the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant, Inc. (ARC-PA) placed the Slippery Rock University Physician Assistant Program sponsored by Slippery Rock University on Accreditation-Probation status until its next review in March 2022.
Probation is a temporary status of accreditation conferred when a program does not meet the Standards and when the capability of the program to provide an acceptable educational experience for its students is threatened.
Once placed on probation, programs that still fail to comply with accreditation requirements in a timely manner, as specified by the ARC-PA, may be scheduled for a focused site visit and/or risk having their accreditation withdrawn.
Specific questions regarding the Program and its plans should be directed to the Program Director and/or the appropriate institutional official(s). The program’s accreditation history can be viewed on the ARC-PA website at Accreditation History, SRU.

Additional Information Regarding Accreditation Status
Based on the March 2020 review, the ARC-PA placed the Slippery Rock University PA Program on accreditation probation status. The Program and University administration have created and initiated a plan of action for addressing the concerns raised by the ARC-PA. The PA Program and the University are implementing these measures.
The PA program will continue to provide high quality education as evidenced in the 94% first time test taker average since the inception of the program.
We would like to reassure our prospective and current students the program maintains accreditation, which allows students to:
- apply for admission to the program,
- progress to program completion,
- sit for board examination (PANCE) upon successful program completion, and
- apply for state licensing.
Enrolling and graduating from a program on Accreditation-Probation means that you are still graduating from an ARC-PA accredited program.
Slippery Rock University is approved to offer programs that may lead to licensure/certification in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. SRU cannot confirm that the PA program meets the requirements for licensure/certification in any other state or commonwealth. If you are considering to enroll in the PA education program and be certified/licensed in a state other than Pennsylvania, please check the specific requirements for licensure in your state. if you are considering to work as a PA in other states that may require certification/licensure, you should first seek guidance on your state's requirements. For more information, please consult the American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA)on the specific state information.
