The following policies and guidance relate to the teaching environment. The Non-discrimination Policy and the Title IX Policy must appear verbatim on the syllabus for each class. Additional policies can be included or linked to by faculty as best suits their desired classroom and learning environment.

Title IX : Slippery Rock University and its faculty are committed to assuring a safe and productive educational environment for all students. In order to comply with the requirements of Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 and the University’s commitment to offering supportive measures in accordance with the new regulations issued under Title IX, the University requires faculty members to report incidents of sexual violence shared by students to the University's Title IX Coordinator. The only exceptions to the faculty member's reporting obligation are when incidents of sexual violence are communicated by a student during a classroom discussion, in a writing assignment for a class, or as part of a University-approved research project. Faculty members are obligated to report sexual violence or any other abuse of a student who was, or is, a child (a person under 18 years of age) when the abuse allegedly occurred to the person designated in the University protection of minors policy. Academic integrity statement

Attendance

Faculty members will determine the attendance policy for their classes. Slippery Rock University requires both students and faculty members to approach excused absences and matters of class attendance in a manner that is cooperative, realistic, and impartial.

Students who need to miss class for athletic participation or academic/leadership opportunities should work directly with their faculty members as early as possible.

Chosen name

Slippery Rock University seeks to create a space where students have the opportunity to bring all aspects of their selves into the classroom in order to fully engage in this course. We support people of all gender expressions and gender identities and encourage students to use the name and set of pronouns which best reflect who they are. In this spirit, faculty and others welcome and expect all students to also use the correct name and pronouns of their classmates. We will do our best to respect and use the language you use to refer to yourself and will encourage other members of our classroom community to do the same. Please inform your faculty member if class documentation reflects a name or set of pronouns different from what you use, and if you have any questions or concerns, please contact your faculty after class, by email, or during office hours.

Disability/accommodations

Mask use/COVID

Effective March 1, 2022, the wearing of face masks inside campus buildings will no longer be required, with limited exceptions that are outlined below.

Exceptions to the updated masking policy:

Masks must be worn within health facilities such as the Student Health Center located in Rhoads Hall.
This updated policy does not mean it is no longer necessary to carry a mask as it will still be appropriate and encouraged to wear masks in certain higher-risk environments, such as crowded spaces, or by respecting the preference of a person who might ask others to wear a mask in their presence.

As members of a caring community, people at SRU are expected to notice instances when face masks might benefit one another, without having a policy that covers all situations, especially when encountering people who are known to be at-risk and have underlying health conditions.

Although face masks are no longer required to be worn indoors, anyone who prefers to continue wearing a mask should feel encouraged to do so.

Disposable masks are available upon request at the Smith Student Center Information Desk, Bailey Library Circulation Desk and the Academic Records and Registration Office. Masks can also be purchased at the SGA Bookstore.

Military absence

Faculty members are required to provide an alternative opportunity or offer equivalent credit for a student to complete missed coursework due to a military-related absence, without prejudicial influence. (ex. exam, quiz, in class work, presentation, etc.). Should you have orders or receive orders this semester, inform your Faculty Member as soon as possible.

Service animals in the classroom

Service animals are generally allowed to accompany their handlers anywhere their handlers are permitted on campus (exceptions may exist in areas requiring protective equipment or clothing for access).
